Microchipping

Microchipping

Keep track of your pet! Microchipping is required for all Albuquerque pets.

Nearly 1 in 3 pets will become lost during their lives. Pet microchipping is a straightforward, inexpensive, and effective way to find lost pets. Microchips keep pets out of animal shelters across Albuquerque and help lost pets find their way back home. These tiny chips are permanent pet identification that cannot be removed or damaged, and if you and your pet ever become separated, the chip helps to reunite you with your pet quickly.

The City of Albuquerque mandates that all dogs and cats residing within city limits must be microchipped.

A simple process

The microchip is contained in a small biocompatible capsule smaller than a grain of rice and is non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and extremely safe. An easy, nearly pain-free procedure places the chip just under the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades. This procedure can be done anytime and is easily incorporated into a routine surgical procedure like a spay or neuter. These microchips are rated for 25 years, meaning they never have to be removed or recharged during your pet’s lifetime.

The transponder works by passively transmitting radio waves with an animal-specific tracking number that displays the pet’s ID number when scanned. Should your pet run away or get lost, a simple chip scan will allow the proper authorities to trace the ID number, determine the owner’s identity, and return the pet home.

Aztec Animal Clinic believes microchipping is the safest, most effective method of pet recovery available, helping reunite more than 15,000 lost pets with their owners every month.
